Aroma and Flavor of Mezcal: The Heart of Durango

3 days

This three-day route takes you from the majesty of Durango’s capital—a key piece of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (the Royal Inland Road)—to the mysticism of the Pueblo Mágico of Nombre de Dios. We will explore the history of Northern Mexico’s evangelization and the deeply rooted Mezcal tradition of the region.

THE ROUTE

Aroma and Flavor of Mezcal: The Heart of Durango

Day 1: Historic Journey through the Royal Inland Road

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome at the Durango International Airport, followed by a transfer to your hotel in the Historic Center. Once settled, we’ll enjoy a sunset tram tour through the city to admire the architecture of the former capital of Nueva Vizcaya and its most iconic monuments.

To close your first night, we suggest dining at one of the exquisite restaurants in the downtown area or the El Calvario neighborhood to soak in the local evening atmosphere.

Day 2: Colonial Treasures and the Spirit of the Agave

After breakfast and check-out, we travel to the Pueblo Mágico of Nombre de Dios, the oldest town in the state, rich in historical and cultural heritage.

Our first stop is the Church of Jesús Nazareno, where we will learn about the historic Cuadro de Ánimas (Painting of Souls) and its site museum. We’ll then walk toward the main plaza to discover the Church of Santiago Apóstol and the romantic ruins of San Francisco. No visit is complete without tasting the famous Gorditas Doña Aleja, a culinary landmark with over 60 years of tradition.

In the afternoon, we’ll check into the Uraján de Luna Hotel & Spa for a session of Cacao and Mezcal therapies.

Pro Tip: We recommend reviewing the spa menu and booking your treatments in advance to ensure availability.

Finally, we’ll enjoy a Mezcal pairing and tasting at Cuero Viejo. In their beautiful vinata (distillery), you’ll learn the artisanal process of this legendary spirit before a relaxing dinner at the hotel.

Day 3: Ancestral Connections and Nature’s Embrace

We start our final day with an Ancestral Cacao Ceremony to renew our energy, followed by a hearty regional breakfast. To bid farewell to the route, we’ll visit the natural landscape of Los Salones, where we’ll walk among centuries-old cypress trees (sabinos) along the banks of the Nombre de Dios River. It is the perfect setting for photography and a final moment of peace in nature before returning to the airport.
