THE ROUTE

Waterfalls and Abysses of San Luis: A Huasteca Journey

Day 1: Waterfall Circuit: El Aguacate and Micos

A first day dedicated to exploring some of the most representative aquatic landscapes of the Huasteca Potosina.

Activities: The day begins with a departure from Ciudad Valles toward the municipality of Tamasopo. After the road trip, we arrive at El Aguacate waterfall, one of the most impressive drops in the region, standing at approximately 70 meters high. To reach the foot of the waterfall, we descend a path with wooden stairs and bridges that serve as viewpoints. On-site, it is possible to enjoy the scenery, swim in natural pools, and appreciate the forest environment surrounding the falling water.

Subsequently, we continue to the Micos waterfalls, a set of several tiered drops that form turquoise pools among tropical vegetation. Here, you can explore the area, enjoy the river, and admire one of the most famous landscapes of the Huasteca. At the end of the tour, we return to Ciudad Valles to enjoy a meal at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we transfer to the hotel to rest.

Día 1

Day 2: Edward James Sculpture Garden and Huahuas Abyss

A day dedicated to discovering two of the most unique sites in the Huasteca Potosina: the architectural surrealism of Xilitla and one of the most impressive natural abysses in the region.

Activities: The day begins with a departure from Ciudad Valles toward the Pueblo Magico of Xilitla. Upon arrival, we start the tour of the Edward James Sculpture Garden, also known as Las Pozas. During the visit, we walk among monumental concrete structures, stairways that seem to lead nowhere, and elevated platforms emerging from the jungle vegetation—the work of British artist Edward James.

After the tour, we continue to the town of Huichihuayan, where we stop for lunch. In the afternoon, we transfer to the Huahuas Abyss (Sotano de Huahuas), a natural cavity approximately 478 meters deep located in the Aquismon mountains. To reach the viewpoint, we take a hike through trails of vegetation and coffee plantations. From the edge of the abyss, we observe the natural spectacle of hundreds of birds—mainly swifts and parrots—returning to the interior of the sinkhole at sunset, forming spirals in the sky. At the end of the experience, we begin the return to Ciudad Valles.
