Day 1: Through the Channels, the Oyster is King
The journey begins with a scenic drive from Tepic toward Santiago Ixcuintla, where a local breakfast kicks off the day before continuing to Sentispac, a traditional village offering a brief pause to enjoy its peaceful plaza and relaxed atmosphere. From there, the route leads to the La Batanga pier, our starting point for a boat trip through mangrove-lined channels toward the mythical Island of Mexcaltitán.
On the island, you’ll discover its unique circular layout, visit its historic church and “El Origen” Museum, and witness the preparation of traditional shrimp tortillas. Lunch features Pacific specialties like Pescado Zarandeado (slow-grilled seasoned fish). Later, the journey continues through the estuaries to the farming zones, where local producers share the fascinating process of raising oysters on floating rafts.
The tour culminates in Boca de Camichín, where fishing traditions come to life. Here, you’ll participate in a small artisanal workshop to craft a keychain using oyster shells. You’ll learn the local “sarta” technique, a traditional method involving lines or ropes used in the oyster-rearing process.
To finish, enjoy a tasting of fresh oysters, a true delicacy straight from the water, allowing you to appreciate their world-class quality and flavor.
