This five-day expedition is a deep dive into the Pre-Hispanic soul of Tamaulipas. Departing from Tampico, we will trace the footsteps of the Huastec civilization, explore lost stone cities in the tropical lowlands, and ascend to ancient ceremonial centers in the Sierra Madre Oriental. This route is designed for history enthusiasts who crave a blend of academic discovery and raw natural beauty.

THE ROUTE

Tamaulipas Archaeological Route: Ancient Kingdoms & Misty Peaks

Day 1: Welcome to the Tamaulipan Huasteca

Our journey begins in Tampico. After checking in, we’ll visit the Las Flores Archaeological Zone to explore one of the region’s most significant Huastec mounds.

Later, we’ll navigate the Carpintero Lagoon and the Cortadura Canal, observing local wildlife from the water. In the afternoon, a traditional tram tour will take us through the Historic Center to admire the Cathedral and vibrant plazas. Don’t miss the chance to try a Torta de la Barda, the city’s culinary icon. End your day admiring the British-style architecture of the Old Maritime Customs Building.

Día 1

Day 2: From El Sabinito to the Pink Lagoon

We head north to La Pesca in the municipality of Soto la Marina. Our main exploration today is El Sabinito, an archaeological wonder featuring over 500 stone structures that reveal the splendor of an ancient highland civilization.

To add a surreal touch, we’ll visit the stunning Laguna Rosa (Pink Lagoon), a dreamscape perfect for world-class photography. The day concludes with fresh seafood at El Pelicano and a free evening to watch the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico.

Día 2

Day 3: Canyons and Horizons in Ciudad Victoria

A scenic road trip takes us to the state capital, Ciudad Victoria. We’ll ascend to the Balcón de Montezuma, an archaeological site perched on the edge of the Sierra Madre. After climbing its iconic 80 stone steps, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the canyons. Keep an eye out for coatimundis and endemic birds.

Back in the city, we’ll visit the Regional History Museum of Tamaulipas, housed in a magnificent 19th-century building, followed by a traditional family meal at El Rinconcito.

Día 3

Day 4: Magic Towns and the Circular Pyramid

After breakfast, we travel to the Pueblo Mágico of Tula to visit Tammapul (“The Place of Mists”). Here, you’ll witness a dramatic contrast between the semi-desert and the cloud forest. The highlight is the enigmatic Circular Pyramid, a unique architectural structure in Northern Mexico.

After a regional lunch at Casa Carrera, we’ll stroll through Tula’s main plaza and visit the San Antonio de Padua Parish. You’ll have time to shop for famous leather crafts (Cueras Tamaulipecas) and lavender products on Hidalgo Street. We’ll spend the night at the cozy Mesón de Mollinedo, a historic local inn.

Día 4

Day 5: The Journey Back to Tampico

We’ll enjoy one last traditional breakfast in Tula before starting our return trip to Tampico. This expedition concludes with the satisfaction of having connected with the deepest historical roots and diverse natural landscapes of Tamaulipas.
