The Oyster Route: Aticama’s Flavors and Legends

Day 1: Ocean Flavors and Coastal Traditions

The journey begins in Tepic, heading toward the coast until we reach the peaceful village of Aticama, where the tide sets the pace of daily life. Our day starts with a traditional homemade breakfast at Gorditas Cristina, a beloved local spot.

Right there, you’ll discover one of the region’s most curious treasures: the Jackfruit (Yaca). You’ll participate in a workshop to prepare a Jackfruit smoothie, tasting this intense tropical fruit that is a staple of local kitchens. With your palate awakened, the tour continues to the Paseo Aticama, a picturesque boardwalk facing the Pacific Ocean, lined with palm trees and scenic lookout points.

Along this walk, you’ll find the Oyster Fisherman Monument (Monumento al Ostionero), a sculpture honoring the labor that defines this community. Here, a demonstration of traditional knowledge begins: local fishermen share the secrets of artisanal oyster extraction, explaining techniques passed down through generations.

The experience gets hands-on with the art of “desgrane”: learning how to shuck fresh oysters and tasting them straight from the shell to appreciate their briny, ocean-fresh flavor. Afterward, join a culinary workshop to prepare “Zambombazos”, a traditional oyster-based dish that showcases the coast’s culinary creativity.

A legendary highlight of the route is the Monument to the “Madwoman of San Blas” (La Loca de San Blas), inspired by the famous tale of the woman who waited years for her sailor to return. Through a theatrical storytelling session, the legend comes to life, connecting you with one of the most famous myths of the Nayarit coastline.

Later, dive into another local tradition with a workshop to prepare the “Balazo”—a typical coastal “shot” drink that perfectly complements seafood. The journey culminates with a full oceanfront meal featuring coastal specialties made with the freshest local ingredients. Before heading back, take some time to stroll along Paseo Aticama, soak in the bay views, and watch the sunset paint the Pacific horizon.
