THE ROUTE

The Muleteer’s Path

Day 1: The Muleteer’s Way

A first day to travel back in time and live the muleteer tradition on the historic Camino Real de Tierra Adentro.

Activities: Arrival in Guanajuato from the Leon bus station (Leon–Ocampo route) or the Guanajuato International Airport with a transfer to the community of San Pedro de Ibarra, where a local host will welcome us. We begin with a guided tour of the historic Hacienda de San Jose del Torreon, where the imposing tower (torreon) stands as a silent witness to centuries of travelers and merchants. We will walk through the ancient corridors that gave rest to the muleteers of the Camino Real, discovering the stories of trade and journeys that marked this legendary route.

We will enjoy a traditional breakfast in the style of the old inns (mesones), with recipes and flavors that evoke the viceregal era. Later, we will symbolically become muleteers, traveling through historical branches of the Royal Road while contemplating the landscapes of the Gran Tunal and sharing a traditional muleteer drink. At the end of the experience, we will check into a cabin surrounded by nature. At night, we will live a special evening around a bonfire, sharing stories with muleteer communities and tasting coporitos (traditional mezcal served in a xoconostle shell) under a starry sky.

A day to live the muleteer tradition through its landscapes, ancestral knowledge, and authentic flavors.

Activities: We start the day at the historic San Jose del Torreon, having breakfast as the ancient travelers did on the banks of the Torreon dam. Later, we will become authentic arrieros accompanied by a beloved donkey that will lead us through the historic branches of the Royal Road. We will walk among the open landscapes of the Gran Tunal, tasting a traditional drink while learning the stories of this legendary route.

We will continue with a traditional herbalism workshop, where we will learn to prepare an ointment with local medicinal herbs, connecting with the healing wisdom that accompanied the muleteers. At lunchtime, we will enjoy traditional cuisine prepared by Petra Salazar, heir to recipes passed down through generations. The day culminates with a special dinner of traditional tamales prepared by Eva Romero, sharing flavors, stories, and the community spirit of this experience.

Day 3: The Silver Road

A route closure that honors the muleteer tradition through the countryside, history, and flavors of the ancient Silver Road.

Activities: We begin the day with a country breakfast prepared over a wood fire at San Jose del Torreon. We then transfer to Rancho El Cielo for a guided tour of its orchard and rural spaces, where we will learn about local crops, participate in milking cows, and interact with the farm animals. We will taste artisanal dairy products made on the ranch, an authentic reflection of the region’s flavor.

We continue to the community of San Pedro de Ibarra to visit its emblematic unfinished temple and take part in a gastronomic experience with artisanal cheeses and freshly baked bread. The journey culminates at the museum dedicated to the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro in Vergel de la Sierra, where we will see historical pieces and documents. To say goodbye, we will enjoy a regional meal at the hotel restaurant, closing the trip with a reflection on the traditions learned and the flavors that brought this unforgettable journey to life.
