Community Tourism in Toyahua: Nature and Tradition

Day 1: Cultural and Community Tour in Toyahua

A first encounter with the traditions, history, and community life of Toyahua through its natural, religious, and artisanal spaces.

Activities: We begin at the Piecito de la Virgen, where we welcome you to the tour and share the local legend of the site, along with recommendations and timing for the visit. Subsequently, we descend toward the lagoon. During the journey, we make a stop at “El Caracol” to learn about the presence of fossils in the area. Upon reaching the lagoon, the importance of this natural space for the community is explained.

We take a break for hydration before continuing to the community garden, where we discuss the festivals, customs, and traditions that form part of daily life. Later, we visit the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Rosary. During the tour, we learn about the arrival of the sacred image to the community, the history of the first chapel, and the current temple, while observing the retablos or ex-votos that hold testimonies of faith.

We continue with a visit to Don Chimino’s basketry workshop, where we learn about the artisanal process and participate in a short activity to craft a small piece. Finally, we have free time to rest, look for a souvenir, or have a snack. The tour concludes with the return to the municipal seat for a walk to explore the historic center of Nochistlan.
